Did you know . . . library cards are free for all California residents? Just stop by any Nevada County Library, fill out the short application and show your California driver's license or ID with proof of address. There is no charge for the card or for borrowing library materials. Applicants younger than age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature on library card form. Patrons, whether resident or non-resident of Nevada County, are eligible for a free library card, subject to the following conditions:
Age Requirements: • Children must be 5 to 17 years of age and use the children’s blue form. Minors must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian with a California driver’s license or California ID card. This person should be aware that they are financially responsible until the child is 18.
• Adults 18 and older must fill out an adult white form. When a child turns 18, he or she needs to complete a new adult form and his or her record is to be updated. In this instance, a replacement card may be issued at no charge.
Proof of Residency:• Patrons must complete the application and show a valid California driver’s license or California ID card.
• Patrons who do not have a California driver’s license or California ID card, but are residents with proof of local address will receive an O card until they obtain a CDL.

Use of Library Card: Patrons should have library cards with them to check out items. If the patron does not have the card, patron may show ID for a single check out without buying a replacement card. Not having the card the one time does not affect the number of items allowed to be checked out. No items will be checked out to a patron without ID.
In order to check out something on another person’s card, the patron should have the other person’s card with them. In the case of holds, the present patron’s card may be used with proper verification, e.g. a note on the other person’s record or the notification letter generated by the library. A parent may only use a child’s card if they are the signer on that card. ID must be present.
Replacement cards are $2.00.
