Cannabis Conversation

Nevada County's history with medical cannabis starts in 1996 with the passage of the Compassionate Use Act for medical cannabis.  Most recently, in the 2016 November election, Propsition 64 was passed in California allowing indoor grow for non-medical cannabis.  Use our medical and non-medical cannabis timeline for a quick history of local cannabis regulations to date. Find current regulations on our Cannabis Conversation: Ordinance page, described in Article 5: Marijuana Cultivation of the County code, or in PDF form.

Community Process

Since the failure of Measure W, the Board of Supervisors Cannabis Regulations Subcommittee has taken steps towards forming a Cannabis Regualtion Community Adivisory Group.  This group will advise the Board on the development of a permanent Cannabis Ordinance for Nevada County that will take into account the input of all community stakeholders.  Nevada County has contracted MIG as a consultant during this process. MIG will provide facilitation services for the Cannabis Regulation Community Advisory Group to ensure a fair and equitable process while advising and drafting a new Cannabis Ordinance.

MIG will:

  • Ensure that the Advisory Group is formed in an inclusive and participartory way
  • Faciltate the formation of the group
  • Facilitate and document the groups work
  • Serve as a liason between the:
    • Advisory Group
    • Board Subcommittee
    • County departments
    • Public
