Hirschdale Road Bridges at Truckee River & Tracks

Project Location

The project site is located in Eastern Nevada County approximately 6 miles east of the Town of Truckee and includes the two bridges located on Hirschdale Road, 17C-045 over the Truckee River and 17C-046 over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks.

Project Description

In May of 2014, Nevada County released the Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND) for the Hirschdale Road Bridges at Truckee River and UPRR Tracks Project. The project involved the removal of the two bridges on Hirschdale Road and replacement of the existing access route with an alternative access road which crossed US Forest Service and quarry property on the north side of the Truckee River. Public comment on the IS/MND identified a number of issues regarding the current project scope that could affect the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the project. As a result of the concerns raised, the County no longer considers bridge removal and alternate public access road construction as the preferred option for these bridges. The County and Caltrans have begun exploring other alternatives, including a seismic retrofit option which keep the bridges in place. The exact scope and detail of a seismic retrofit option would not be determined until after a consultant evaluation of the alternative. The consultant will evaluate the seismic safety of the bridges and suggest cost-effective repairs to extend their useful life. Those recommendations are expected to be ready in the summer of 2015, and the County will then make a decision on a repair/retrofit project.
