1) Take Your Pick: Choose your blind date book from a display of wrapped books located in the windows of the Penn Valley Library. Pick out your blind date based on the blurb on the front. Staff will check your selection out at front door pick-up and then open it when you get home!
2) Matchmaker: Tell us what you are looking for in a book, and we'll set up you up with a few selections for your blind date! Fill out a survey beginning February 5th, and we'll have your book ready to pick-up at Penn Valley in a few days. CLICK HERE to complete the blind date form. Shelly Covert is the Spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. She sits on the Tribal Council and is community outreach liaison. She is also the Executive Director of the Tribally guided, non-profit, CHIRP (the California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project), whose mission is to preserve, protect and perpetuate Nisenan Culture. Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribal members are direct, lineal descendants of the original indigenous people who were here thousands of years before the gold rush. Most of Shelly's work is focused within the Bear and Yuba river watersheds which are the Ancestral homelands of her Tribe.

At these schools, children are forbidden to speak their native tongue and are taught to abandon their Indian ways.
Native American artist Judith Lowry's illustrations are inspired by the stories she heard from her father and uncle. The lyrical narrative and compelling paintings blend memory and myth in this bittersweet story of the boys' journey home one summer and the healing power of their culture.
