Nevada County, Caliifornia is a rural county comprising 978 square miles with a population of approximately 99,000. Prior to the Gold Rush, there were estimated to be about 4,000 Nisenan Indians inhabiting the area. Life changed in 1848,when discovery of gold in California brought the first white settlers of Penn Valley. People of all nationalities came to work the mines. The 1852 census showed 3,396 Chinese people living in Nevada County. By 1880, 75,132 Chinese people constituted 22% of California's mining population. In 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which reduced the Chinese population to 632 by 1890.
The railroad and the first transcontinental automobile road brought famous stage personalities, writers, politicians, and industrialists. More recently, Nevada County's high-tech firms, outstanding schools, rich artistic community and cultural attractions, and scenic natural resources make it a desirable location for residents and visitors alike.
