Let’s Talk About Weed at the Library

In January 2020, the Madelyn Helling Library is hosting two programs that focus on different aspects of cannabis in communities. First on January 10th, is an event in collaboration with POV, the award-winning independent nonfiction film series on PBS (www.pbs.org/pov). From 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Library will be hosting a viewing of the PBS POV short film, Standing Silent Nation. In April 2000, Alex White Plume and his Lakota family planted industrial hemp on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota after other crops had failed. But when federal agents raided the White Plumes' fields, the Lakota Nation was swept into a Byzantine struggle over tribal sovereignty, economic rights and common sense. Popcorn will be served, and there will be time for a brief conversation following.

The next program on Thursday, January 30th, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. is a Livingroom Conversation on Legalized Marijuana. Living Room Conversations offers a simple, sociable and structured way to practice communicating across differences while building understanding and relationships. Rather than debating or convincing others, we take turns talking to share and learn. No preparation is required. As the push for legalization spreads across the US, a different conversation emerges around marijuana. Proponents see this as an advance in freedom and liberty, trusting adults to decide what is best about a substance that is equated with alcohol and nicotine. On the other side, critics see the march to legalization as yet another step in the loosening moral discipline of our country. What are the new questions to ask? How do we envision our lives where/when marijuana is legal? What are results from states with early legalization? How should tax revenues be allocated?

Come explore these topics in a space that is welcome and open to all this January.
