The Nevada County Community Library will host a Zoom streaming presentation with Q&A at the end on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at 2:00 pm, featuring Shelly Covert, Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council Spokesperson and executive director of California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP). “A Culture Scattered: From the Bottom of a Lake to Russian Museum” will highlight the cultural reclamation work of the Nisenan Tribe, focusing on Covert’s trip to Russia to visit sacred cultural regalia. Covert will discuss the importance of the grants that support the work of reclaiming the shards of Nisenan culture that are scattered across the state, the nation, and the globe.
“A Culture Scattered” is the fourth and final program in the Nisenan Speaker Series of the project, “The Voice of the Nisenan: We Are Still Here.” The Library and the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan are proud to partner on this grant, which is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act and administered by the California State Library. Grant activities, which include the creation of a Nisenan-language picture book and an online collection of Nisenan materials, seek to create opportunities for the public to learn about Nisenan culture, history, and language.
