After a strong candidate recruitment, Nevada County Executive Officer Alison Lehman has appointed Nick Wilczek as the Nevada County Librarian effective June 22, 2020. Mr. Wilczek has spent the past two years as Director of the Humboldt County Library (HCL). During Nick’s time with HCL, the library developed a new strategic plan, created a type of account for community members without a permanent address, and brought broadband internet access to multiple branches. Nick’s professional philosophy focuses on improving the customer experience and building relationships throughout the community.
Prior to his position as Director of the Humboldt County Library, he served as Director of the Garden Home Community Library in Portland, Oregon, Branch Manager of the Arcata Library in Humboldt County, California, and Reference & Adult Services Librarian in Lexington, Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Master of Library Science degrees, both from the University of Kentucky.
Nick’s passion for librarianship stems from his love of community. Accordingly, it is his belief that the role of the library is to use its tools – staff expertise, collections, programs, etc. – to make its community a better place.
“I’m thrilled and honored to be appointed Nevada County’s library director. I love close knit rural communities and cannot wait to relocate and start meeting folks. Between a creative and energetic staff, beautiful facilities, and Measure A funding, I believe the library’s potential is immeasurable.” Said Mr. Wilczek. “My fiancé and I couldn’t be happier about this opportunity. We’re excited to make Nevada County our home and become a part of the community”.
Nick’s first career in the field of hospitality management has been incredibly informative to his work as a librarian. While working with Hyatt Regency he learned the skills necessary to provide exemplary customer services, skills that he has brought with him to each of his library positions. In addition to fostering a deep love of service, Nick’s time in the hotel industry gives him private sector perspectives often missing from the world of public libraries. Namely, he sees the relationship between tourism, the economy, local business opportunities, entrepreneurship, and the library.
Nick’s love of community extends beyond his professional life. He has volunteered as a youth basketball coach, taught English as a Second Language, serves as a judge for the Humboldt Science Fair, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Eureka.
The Nevada County Community Library oversees over 33 employees with an annual budget of approximately $5 million. Services are provided at six locations in Western Nevada County and the Town of Truckee.
