September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. As part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month the county has planned a number of activities, including training opportunities for community members (see below for details) and a virtual Suicide Prevention Town Hall with YubaNet.

We are fortunate in Nevada County to have many suicide prevention resources available, including Let’s Talk Nevada County, the Nevada County Crisis Line at 530-265-5811 and the Crisis Stabilization Unit, a four-bed mental health urgent care, to the left of the Emergency Department at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley. Last year in Nevada County, thousands of residents called our local crisis line or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline looking for help. If you are struggling, you are not alone. Help is available.

Suicide Prevention Virtual Town Hall

Taking care of ourselves and others is important, particularly now when many people are feeling stressed, anxious and worried about the future. But where do you start looking for help if you or someone you know is struggling? What are some of the warning signs of suicide? What suicide prevention resources are available locally in our community and our schools? We invite community members to join local mental health and suicide prevention professionals to get answers to your questions about how our community can support people who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide. The virtual Suicide Prevention Town Hall on Thursday, September 9 from 6:00-7:30pm is free and open to the public. Register here to receive the Zoom information for the Town Hall.

Suicide prevention trainings are available through Nevada County Department of Public Health by request and at no cost. Below are the details on two Know the Signs suicide prevention trainings planned for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month that are open to the general public. In the Know the Signs Suicide Prevention Training, attendees will learn about the warning signs of suicide, how to engage with someone they’re concerned about, and resources available to help. Last year nearly 400 Nevada County residents attended a Know the Signs training.
