Nevada County Contracts with Community Partners for Sheltering During Extreme Winter Weather

In an ongoing effort to implement the County Homeless Plan, the Board of Supervisors approved two new partnerships with Sierra Roots and the Salvation Army during Tuesday’s Board meeting. These contracts will fully support 20 nights each for sheltering homeless citizens during extremely cold winter nights for up to a combined total of 60 homeless individuals each night who are unable to access Hospitality House, due to capacity or other barriers that prohibit access.

Cold Weather Shelter Criteria

The shelters will open on days that weather criteria is met:

  • Temperature below 30 degrees
  • Temperature below 34 degrees with 1" rain in a 24 hour period
  • Temperature below 34 degrees with snow on the ground; or 3 or more consecutive days of rain).

Shelters will open around 4:30 p.m. and close the following morning around 8:00 a.m. during these designated severe weather events.

Shelter Details

The Salvation Army will focus on sheltering families at their main facility on Alta Street in Grass Valley. Sierra Roots will be working closely with the City of Nevada City to utilize either the Seaman's Lodge or the Veteran's Hall. The shelters will provide a clean space, a safe environment, and warm temporary shelter for Nevada County residents.
