HOME Team Project to Address Chronic Homelessness Approved by State Commission

The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission approved Nevada County Behavioral Health’s Innovation proposal for the Homeless Outreach and Medical Engagement (HOME) Team. The HOME Team Innovation proposal aims to address Nevada County’s chronically homeless population and will include a Nurse, Personal Services Coordinator, and Peer Specialist to identify physical health, mental health, and substance use disorder needs in a welcoming manner. The team will meet with individuals who are experiencing chronic homelessness at locations in the community where they are living.

In addition to field-based outreach, the HOME team will also work closely with key partners such as the hospital, homeless shelter, law enforcement, and jail and will be able to make referrals to low barrier master-leased housing units, without the preconditions of traditional County Behavioral Health services.

The National Weather Service is predicting about 5 inches of rain in the foothills this Tuesday and Wednesday.

In an effort to collaborate over one of our most vulnerable populations, the City of Nevada City, Sierra Roots and Nevada County initiated their Extreme Weather Shelter Protocol for Tuesday and Wednesday nights, March 5th through the morning of March 7th.

PG&E Presents Community Wildfire Safety Program to Board of Supervisors

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) presented their Community Wildfire Safety Program to the Board of Supervisors at Tuesday's February 26th meeting.

PG&E's Wildfire Safety Program has a three pronged approach: real-time monitoring and intelligence, new and enhanced safety measures and system hardening and resiliency. To help support these efforts, PG&E plans to install 1,300 new weather stations and 600 high-definition cameras by 2022 to help monitor wildfire risks in real time from their 24/7 Wildfire Safety Operations Center.

In addition, PG&E is enhancing their vegetation management around power lines and conducting wildfire/electric system safety inspections in the California Public Utilities Commission's high fire-threat areas like Nevada County.

Hazardous vegetation abatement

Code Compliance Completes First Hazardous Vegetation Abatement Case

Nevada County just completed its first nuisance abatement under the Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance.  The subject property posed serious fire, health and safety risks to neighboring parcels.  Upon inspection, approximately 28 dead or decaying trees were located within 100 feet of neighboring habitable structures. 

The local fire authority attempted to work with the property owner and provide guidance to mitigate fire risk while bringing the property into compliance with the County’s Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance.  However, after over a year of frequent contact, numerous follow-up inspections, and missed deadlines, it became apparent the property owner was not willing to bring the property into compliance.  Additionally, neighbors became more concerned as the property health continued to decline.  The case was subsequently referred to Nevada County’s Code Compliance Division for nuisance abatement.

The Code Compliance Division worked with a contractor to complete a nuisance abatement at the subject property.  The contractor removed all dead and decaying trees within 100 feet of neighboring habitable structures, and all fallen trees, bark, and limbs from the property.  The abatement and all associated costs will be recorded as a lien on the subject property.

NCSOS Wildfire Safety Summit at Nevada Union, March 5th

Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS) is hosting two Safety Summit's for Parents in March. Learn about wildfires, lock-downs, and sheltering-in-place as a parent or guardian of a student. Local law, fire and school representatives will speak about the collaborative efforts to support the safety of our students.

Join NCSOS next week, March 5th, in the Don Baggett Theater at Nevada Union High School, or on March 12th at the Community Theater at Bear River High School. Both events will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

It's not too early to start preparing for fire season. Follow along with YubaNet’s weekly articles aimed at helping residents take “bite sized” steps to prepare for the next high fire season. Over 25 weeks the articles address, “vegetation management on private properties, how to harden your home, what you need to do now to be ready if/when evacuations are being called for your area, how-to guides for communication plans, evacuation plans, how Nevada County Schools prepare for wildfire and more. Each story will have resources to help you keep your family safe.”

Week 12 is on vehicle safety. If you need to evacuate, having a vehicle that is well-maintained with working breaks, headlights, wipers and wiper fluid; a full tank of gas; and a car go bag can help make you prepared for your drive to safety.

South Yuba River Cohort: Partnerships on Public Safety

Efforts to promote resident and visitor safety at the South Yuba River are continuing. On Tuesday, February 19th, District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek led the first Yuba River Public Safety Cohort meeting for 2019 to discuss the year’s plan. District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall and former District 4 Supervisor Hank Weston established the Cohort in 2017 to help coordinate the activities of the various public agencies, advocacy groups and homeowners to develop and implement strategies around public safety and wildfire prevention.

Although beautiful, the South Yuba River is as dangerous as it is strong and has a high potential for wildfire. Every year someone drowns at the South Yuba River and, due to high camping volumes and illegal campfires during the summer fire season, high winds could cause a fire to become unmanageable very quickly.

Since 2017, the Cohort has made significant progress on increasing safety efforts throughout the South Yuba River region, but with a high snow pack that will create dangerous swimming conditions come spring and dry brush susceptible to wildfire come summer and fall, the Cohort will continue to meet monthly to develop its plan of action for the upcoming year.

2019 Local Road Safety Plan

On Tuesday, February 26th, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved the 2019 Local Road Safety Program. Nevada County has the 3rd lowest fatality rates of all counties in California. However, in the past 3 years, 1 percent of collisions in Nevada County have resulted in fatalities. The County is targeting zero fatalities over the next 3 years.

To reach this goal, Public Works has worked with community members, County departments, and local agencies and commissions to create the 2019 Nevada County Local Road Safety Plan (LRSP). The LRSP identifies priority areas for road improvements including strategies to address improper turning and broadside collisions; unsafe speeds, object impact and rear-end collisions; and driving under the influence. To address these safety concerns, Public Works has intersection and signage improvements, additional traffic signals, and radar trailers planned and will partner with California Highway Patrol on public education and increased enforcement were identified.

Nevada County Community Library: Create. Connect. Inspire. logo

StoryCorps Application Deadline Extended to March 8th

StoryCorps, a national nonprofit committed to recording the stories of everyday people, is partnering with the Nevada County Community Library to record and preserve the stories of our community.

On March 26th, 27th and 28th at the Madelyn Helling Library, StoryCorps will be recording Nevada County residents’ conversations with a family member, friend, or colleague. Participants will have 40 minutes of uninterrupted time to talk to each other about ties that they have with another person and anything else that is meaningful to them. StoryCorps will record the conversation and, with the participants’ permission, archive it at the Library of Congress so it will be preserved for future generations.  Interviews will also be shared with our community. Participants and conversation partners will both be provided with a recorded copy of the conversation.

The deadline to submit an application to participate in StoryCorps has been extended to March 8th. There are only 15 slots for interviews, so a selection committee will choose the participants.

First 5 Nevada County: 20 year anniversary

First 5 Nevada County 20th Anniversary

At Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board recognized the 20th anniversary of First 5 Nevada County, a local organization that creates, fosters and supports child development programs for children ages 0 to 5.

First 5 Nevada County works to support families through programs and systems like home visiting, professional development and child care teachers, and family resource centers. With their partners, First 5 Nevada County has seen that 39 percent fewer kids age 0 to 5 suffered abuse compared to 2011, 44 percent fewer had lead poisoning compared to 2010, there has been a 20 percent increase in effective parenting for parents who take a parenting class, and 90 percent of newborns are breastfed.

Job Openings at Nevada County: Truckee Behavioral Health Therapist

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

The Behavioral Health Children's Division is seeking to hire a temporary licensed therapist or registered intern for an average of 20 hours per week that will provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group therapy, collateral/parent counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and documentation of services to a caseload of approximately 12 children or youth who are EPSDT/MediCal beneficiaries. These roles will include active collaboration with county partners including schools, probation, child protective services, substance use treatment providers and family resource centers to meet the individualized needs of youth. This position has an emphasis on providing mental health services and collaboration at school sites. The position also participates in meetings and assigned training as a member of the Behavioral Health Clinical Team.  This position is located in our Truckee Office.
